If you are based in Canada and want to start your career as a security guard, you should have a security guard license, whether you want a full-time job or a part-time gig to earn extra money. It’s one of the easiest jobs for students, but you need to get your documents and meet the eligibility criteria. The process of getting a security guard license is simple, and once you have your license in Ontario, Canada, you can find work easily. Once you have worked in the field for ample time, you also become eligible for permanent residency.
Being a licensed security guard is more than just standing around and looking for any suspicious activity. You play a big role in keeping people and places safe, which is an important responsibility.
But don’t worry, this blog post will take you through the step-by-step process of getting an Ontario security guard license.
We’ll cover the basic requirements, how to get security guard license in Ontario, training, passing the test, how to apply for your license, and how to get it renewed.
What is a Security Guard Job, and who is Eligible For this Job?
A security guard helps protect people, parking lots, buildings, construction site, property, and vehicles. It’s not just about standing by the door or watching cameras. You are the first line of defence in keeping places safe. You might be the person who helps someone in trouble, prevents something bad from happening, or just makes people feel secure by being there.
Some of the main responsibilities of a licensed security guard in Ontario are:
- Site Monitoring: Your main job being a security guard is to monitor the site and ensure its safety.
- Patrolling: You’ll have to patrol a building or parking lots, check who’s coming and going, or monitor security cameras depending on the type of work you’ll get from the company hiring you.
Incident Response: If something goes wrong, like a fire or a medical emergency, you might be the first one on the scene to help. You’ll be trained in first aid and CPR, so you know what to do.
Reporting: You’ll have to document daily activities, incidents, and observations in detailed reports for supervisors or law enforcement.
Helping People: Sometimes, people just need help finding their way or getting through a situation. You’ll be there to assist, making everyone feel safe and supported.
Who is Eligible to be a Licensed Security Guard in Ontario?
To become a security guard in Ontario, there are a few criteria you need to meet:
Age: You must be at least 18 years old. This is important because it’s a job that comes with responsibility.
Work Permit: You must be legally allowed to work in Canada. This means you should have the right paperwork, such as being a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or having a work permit if you are a foreigner, which will be issued by the Federal Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
- No Criminal Record: Your criminal record should be crystal clear. This means that you should have never been involved in any criminal activity. This is because security guards need to be trusted by the public. This rule was implemented on February 18, 2024. You’ll need to get a criminal record, and judicial matters check done by the Ontario police as part of your application.

During the course, you’ll learn all the basics of being a security guard, like how to protect people and property, handle emergencies, and communicate effectively.
